Cheakamus Housing
Supportive homes for adults with developmental disabilities – right here in Whistler.

WISH (Whistler Independent Supportive Housing) has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Whistler Sport Legacies to secure 10 integrated rental homes within a Cheakamus neighbourhood building. This community-first model blends independent living with the right supports so adults with developmental disabilities can live, work, and thrive in Whistler alongside their neighbours.

At a Glance

10 Homes

Ten homes integrated throughout the building. 6 two-bedroom homes designed for residents who will have a live-in support “buddy”. 4 one-bedroom homes for residents with higher independence, with daily check-ins.

Target population

Adults with developmental disabilities who want to live independently in Whistler with appropriate supports.

Amenity space

A portion of a 4,000-sq-ft shared amenity area will be dedicated to day programming (e.g., life-skills coaching, one-on-one counselling space, kitchen for group meal prep, and community gatherings).

Support model

A homeshare (live-in “buddy” supports) or subsidized living model is currently under development.

Construction Schedule

Groundbreaking in 2026 with target occupancy in 2028.

Funding Model

WISH aims to raise funds to create a barrier-free endowment that ensures all residents can thrive in their homes.

How the Support Works

Our mixed-support model meets people where they are:

  • Live-in “Buddy” homes (6 units): A second bedroom accommodates a support “buddy”—often a local worker—who provides reminders, role-modeling, and everyday support (think meds, meals, and routines).
  • Independent homes (4 units): Residents with higher independence receive regular daily check-ins and ongoing program access.
  • Day programming & community: The dedicated amenity space supports weekly meal planning and prep, life-skills sessions, small group activities, and inclusive social events.

Why This Matters

Moving out is a rite of passage. For many adults with developmental disabilities, this is often their first and only move toward independent living. Cheakamus Housing provides choice, dignity, and stability-keeping people connected to family, friends, work, and community in Whistler.

Get Involved

WISH is building a $5-million endowment to close the affordability gap (most residents are on fixed incomes) and to fund essential program administration. Your support creates lasting, local impact.

  • Donate: Help build the endowment that keeps these homes affordable for the long term.
  • Partner: Corporate sponsors and community partners are welcome.
  • Volunteer / Learn more: Join our mailing list or reach out to explore roles like “buddy” support or program facilitation.
