WISH was not just a concept
but a heartfelt initiative that sprouted from a group of Whistler parents. Their shared concern about the future of their children with developmental disabilities led to the birth of WISH. These parents, who first connected while their children were in high school, voiced their hopes and fears: How could their children continue to live in the community they loved? How could they ensure their safety and well-being? The need for action became evident when some families and long-time Whistler residents were forced to leave due to the lack of support and housing options for individuals with disabilities. This challenge inspired the group to create supported, independent living solutions, allowing their children—now young adults—to stay in Whistler, maintain their networks, and reduce future dependence on government assistance. In response, WISH (Whistler Independent Supported Housing) was established in 2019 as a collaborative effort among these families. They registered as a non-profit organization in British Columbia, organized successful fundraisers, and formed a dedicated board of directors. Achieving charitable status enabled them to secure grants and donations, propelling their vision of supportive housing forward. Today, WISH is committed to fostering an inclusive community where individuals with cognitive, intellectual, social, developmental, and physical disabilities can thrive. Their efforts ensure that their loved ones and others with similar needs can continue to live in Whistler and benefit from the community they cherish. As WISH continues to advance its mission, the possibilities for creating a more inclusive and supportive environment are limitless. With their dedication and the community’s support, WISH’s future is bright and promising.”
WHY It matters
“Every parent wants their child to be happy, safe and secure. We all want to know they’re going to be okay, especially when we’re no longer around. Parents of developmentally disabled children need to also consider the reality that their child will always need varying degrees of support to achieve this future.”
