Eligibility Criteria for Residency

To be considered for residency within the WISH housing community, applicants must meet the following eligibility criteria:

Age and Disability Criteria

  • Applicants must be 19 years of age or older.
  • Applicants must have a diagnosis of a neurodiverse or developmental disability.

Government Designation

  • Applicants must have a current lifetime Persons with Disabilities (PWD) designation with the Province of British Columbia.

CLBC Support Plan

  • Applicants must have active access to Community Living BC (CLBC) services.
  • Applicants must have allocated CLBC support hours appropriate for semi-independent living, based on their assessed needs.

Support Environment Compatibility

  • Applicants must be able to live within a shared residential community setting.
  • Individuals with complex psychiatric conditions or behaviours that may significantly disrupt communal living or compromise the safety and well-being of residents may not be eligible.

Assessment of Support Needs

Eligibility will be evaluated through a structured review of each applicant’s support needs, independence, and compatibility with the WISH housing model.

Applicants may be required to provide the following documentation:

  • Government Supports Assessment (GSA) Report. A standardized assessment used by government agencies to determine an individual's level of required support.
  • CLBC documentation outlining approved support hours and services.

WISH may also conduct or request an Independent Living Skills (ILS) Assessment to ensure the applicant has the necessary supports in place to live successfully within the residence.

Independent Living Expectations

WISH provides housing but does not deliver direct care or personal support services.

Residents must be able to live independently with appropriate external supports. This includes demonstrating the ability to:

  • Prepare simple meals.
  • Maintain personal hygiene.
  • Follow a daily routine.
  • Keep their personal living space clean and organized.
  • Participate respectfully in a shared living environment.

Support workers funded through CLBC or other programs may assist residents in maintaining independence.

Family Participation and Responsibilities

The WISH housing model is built on community involvement and family engagement. Families and caregivers play an important role in supporting the long-term success of residents.

Family / Caregiver Interview and Documentation

Families or caregivers must participate in an intake interview with the WISH Intake & Family Committee and provide all required documentation for review.

Legal and Support Arrangements

Families or caregivers are expected to ensure that appropriate legal representation or decision-making arrangements are in place where required (e.g., Representation Agreement).

Ongoing Engagement

Families are expected to remain actively engaged in the WISH community, including participation in:

  • Resident and family meetings
  • WISH Society committees or volunteer opportunities
  • Community events and activities that support the well-being of residents and the operation of the residence.

Family involvement helps strengthen the shared community environment that is central to the WISH model.

Resident Selection Process

Please note that applications are not approved on a first-come, first-served basis.

Resident selection is based on:

  • Eligibility criteria.
  • Compatibility with the WISH housing model.
  • Compatibility with the existing resident community.

Applications are reviewed by an independent, non-biased Tenant Review Panel to ensure fairness, transparency, and the best possible community fit.

Legal Disclaimer and Responsibility Statement

The Whistler Independent Supported Housing Society (WISH) provides independent housing within a supportive community environment. WISH does not provide medical care, personal care services, behavioural support, or direct supervision to residents.

Residents are responsible for arranging and maintaining their own support services through appropriate agencies, including Community Living BC (CLBC) or other approved service providers.

Families, caregivers, and/or legal representatives are responsible for ensuring that:

  • Appropriate support services are in place and maintained for the resident.
  • Any changes in health, behaviour, or support needs are communicated to the appropriate service providers.
  • Legal decision-making arrangements (such as a Representation Agreement or other legal authority, where applicable) are maintained.

WISH is not responsible for the provision, coordination, or management of personal support services, and cannot guarantee the availability or performance of third-party support providers.

Residency in the WISH housing community is contingent on residents maintaining a level of independence and support appropriate to the shared living environment. If a resident’s needs change significantly and can no longer be safely supported within the housing model, WISH reserves the right to review residency status and work with families and support agencies to determine appropriate next steps.
